In a shocking incident stemming from superstition, a son in the Sarwani village of the Chakarbhatha police station area in Bilaspur district, Chhattisgarh, brutally murdered his own mother with an axe. The son, 38-year-old Vishnu Kewat, who lived with his wife and children, had been distressed by the children’s recurring poor health. After seeking treatment from various healers and shamans, a local shaman convinced Vishnu that his children were victims of witchcraft, allegedly performed by someone close to them. Repeated questioning led the shaman to claim that Vishnu’s own mother, Mantora Bai Kewat, was responsible. Believing the shaman’s words, Vishnu confronted his mother, and when she denied the accusations, he attacked and killed her with an axe. Following the murder, Vishnu surrendered to the Chakarbhatha police station, confessing his crime. The police have initiated an investigation after sending the body for a post-mortem examination and registering a case of murder against the accused.
