The spiritual fervor of Makar Sankranti transformed Haridwar’s Har Ki Pauri into a vibrant hub of devotion this week. Ignoring the plummeting mercury levels, lakhs of faithful souls immersed themselves in the Ganga’s purifying waters, continuing a timeless tradition despite the winter’s grip.

This festival, celebrated with kite-flying, bonfires, and sesame-based delicacies in many parts of India, takes on a uniquely pious hue in Haridwar. The Snan at Har Ki Pauri is considered highly auspicious, promising divine blessings and karmic cleansing.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of extraordinary unity – families, sadhus, and tourists alike dipping into the icy river while priests blessed the crowds. Enhanced security measures, including drone surveillance and additional police deployment, ensured order amid the massive influx.

‘Every shiver is worth it for this darshan of Ganga Maa,’ shared pilgrim Sunita Devi from Bihar. Temporary camps offering hot prasad and blankets dotted the area, showcasing community spirit. The event also boosted local economy, with shops selling puja items and traditional attire seeing brisk business.

Looking ahead, the Kumbh Mela preparatory vibes are palpable, as Makar Sankranti serves as a precursor. Environmentalists remind visitors to avoid plastic and support Ganga conservation efforts. As chants of ‘Har Har Gange’ echoed, the celebrations underscored the enduring power of faith over physical discomfort.
