China’s Radar Near India’s ‘Chicken’s Neck’: Dhaka’s Strategic Move

Bangladesh is reportedly set to deploy a Chinese air defence radar system at Lalmonirhat Airbase, raising concerns in New Delhi. This strategic location near India’s ‘Chicken’s Neck’ corridor, a vital and narrow passage, has prompted objections from Indian defence authorities. Security officials confirm that components of the new radar system have already arrived at the base. Significant upgrades are underway, including the construction of a new hangar intended to house fighter jets and the installation of advanced radar technology. This move follows a visit by an Indian military intelligence team to the region, which observed ongoing construction and infrastructure development at the airbase. While Dhaka itself is not perceived as a direct threat, there are apprehensions that it could be utilized by India’s adversaries. Reports suggest past discussions between Bangladeshi officials and a Chinese company regarding the procurement of advanced surface-to-air missile systems and radar technology. The JSG-400 TDR radar, a Chinese fire control system, is believed to be part of these upgrades. This development comes shortly after Bangladesh activated its second GM 403-M long-range air surveillance radar, highlighting a broader push to enhance its air defence capabilities.
