Hundreds of students gathered at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday to protest alleged irregularities in Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examinations. The demonstration led to the detention of several protesters, sparking political controversy. The Congress party has strongly criticized the central government, accusing it of using the police to suppress the students’ protest and assault them. The Congress stated that the Modi government attempted to crush the SSC students’ movement by sending the police at night. The party condemned the action, emphasizing the students had been demanding reforms in the SSC for months and were forced to resort to a demonstration in Delhi when their concerns were ignored.
The Congress asserted the government should listen to the students’ demands, deeming them justified. Protesters reported the police forcibly removed them from the demonstration site. Visuals shared on social media depicted a large crowd at the protest site. Some participants also cited mismanagement in recruitment, pointing to administrative failures and a lack of transparency in the examination process. Police, however, denied any wrongdoing, stating approximately 1,500 protesters had gathered at Ramlila Maidan. Of these, 44 were detained after refusing to disperse despite repeated requests and warnings. The protest has once again highlighted the long-standing issue of transparency in recruitment exams, with protesters arguing the movement reflects growing discontent and deep disappointment over the way the SSC exams are conducted and results processed.
