Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has criticized the Indian government’s stance on Russia’s military cooperation with Pakistan. Ramesh questioned the Modi government’s response to Russia supplying RD-93MA engines for the Chinese-made JF-17 Block-III fighter jets used by Pakistan. He highlighted the strategic implications, given that these engines enhance the aircraft’s capabilities and allow them to be equipped with PL-15 missiles, which Pakistan allegedly used against India during Operation Sindoor. Ramesh pointed out that, according to the Indian Air Force chief, the JF-17 was among the aircraft shot down by the Indian Air Force in May 2025. He also raised concerns about the failure of Indian foreign policy, alleging that the deal proceeded despite the direct intervention of the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Ramesh questioned how Russia’s actions align with India’s ongoing defense purchases, such as the S-400 missile system and potential deals for Su-57 stealth fighters, suggesting a failure of the government’s diplomatic efforts and a prioritization of image over national interests. He further noted that this development reflects a weakening of India’s regional diplomacy and global influence, citing the fact that Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has received respect in the US and is now receiving strategic support from Russia. Ramesh called upon the Modi government to explain why India has failed to maintain its alliances despite its ‘personal diplomacy’ and why the government remains silent on Pakistan’s new military support.
