CP Radhakrishnan was sworn in as India’s 15th Vice President on September 12, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at 10:10 am. Radhakrishnan, a 67-year-old veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, and a product of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), secured 452 votes in the vice-presidential election. His opponent, B Sudershan Reddy, the INDIA bloc nominee and a former Supreme Court judge, received 300 votes. The victory of Radhakrishnan was anticipated, given the BJP-led NDA’s strong support, with 427 MPs on paper, along with backing from the YSR Congress Party and smaller parties, exceeding the halfway mark. There were also indications of cross-voting in his favor. The election was triggered by the sudden resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. Following his election, Radhakrishnan resigned as the Governor of Maharashtra. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat has been given the additional charge of Maharashtra until a new governor is appointed. Radhakrishnan, a two-time MP from Coimbatore and former BJP Tamil Nadu chief, has a long-standing political career, having commenced his journey with the Jana Sangh and continuing as a prominent figure in the BJP.
