A severe cyclonic storm, named Montha, is intensifying in the Bay of Bengal, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. The storm is projected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, on the evening or night of October 28th, if it maintains its current north-northwestward path.

Currently, Montha is characterized by maximum sustained winds of 90–100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph. Meteorologists anticipate heavy to very heavy rainfall across coastal Andhra, with some areas potentially experiencing extreme downpours. The system has developed from clusters of low and medium-level clouds over the central and southern Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, indicating significant storm development.

Authorities are taking extensive preparedness measures. Red alerts are in effect for Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore districts. Officials have been directed to distribute dry and cooked food in vulnerable localities and to ensure essential supplies like medicines and relief materials are positioned in affected areas. Evacuation and shelter plans are being implemented as necessary. The public is advised to stay informed through official weather bulletins and follow safety instructions to minimize risks. The IMD will continue to provide regular updates on the cyclone’s progression.
