Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is set to embark on a two-day visit to Australia, commencing Thursday. The primary focus of the visit will be to strengthen bilateral defense and strategic ties, with discussions centered on ‘new and meaningful’ initiatives. During the visit, both sides are expected to sign three agreements, aimed at enhancing information sharing, bolstering maritime security cooperation, and promoting collaboration in areas of joint activities. This visit marks the first by a Defense Minister under the Modi government since 2014 and coincides with the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).

The visit is at the invitation of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence of Australia, Richard Marles. The Ministry stated that the visit presents a significant opportunity for both nations to explore new and substantial initiatives to further fortify bilateral relations and defense partnerships. Discussions will also encompass a comprehensive review of the current situation in the Indo-Pacific region, against the backdrop of growing global concerns regarding China’s increasing military strength in the region. Rajnath Singh will also hold bilateral discussions with his Australian counterpart and preside over a business roundtable in Sydney, involving industry leaders from both countries. He is also scheduled to meet with other national leaders of Australia. India and Australia have seen an expansion of defense relations in recent years, including capacity building, training, ship visits, and bilateral exercises. The signing of three agreements is planned during this visit, aiming to enhance cooperation in information sharing, the maritime sector, and joint activities.
