A distressing incident has emerged from Maharashtra’s Phaltan region, where a dedicated woman doctor tragically died by suicide. Her final moments revealed a harrowing account of alleged sexual assault and prolonged torment, naming a police sub-inspector in a note scrawled on her palm. This shocking revelation has led to the suspension of the accused officer, Gopal Badne, and ignited widespread public outcry and political condemnation.
The doctor, serving at the Phaltan sub-district hospital, reportedly detailed in her palm-written message that she was subjected to rape four times and endured severe physical and mental abuse for months. Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered against the sub-inspector and another individual under charges of rape and abetment to suicide. The Satara District Superintendent of Police has assured a thorough investigation and strict legal action.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, it has come to light that the doctor had previously lodged a formal complaint with the Deputy Superintendent of Police in June. In that complaint, she cited harassment by three officers from the Phaltan Rural Police Department and sought intervention. The lack of a decisive response to her earlier plea has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including political leaders who question the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens and ensuring accountability within law enforcement.
The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has taken serious cognizance of the matter and initiated an investigation into the alleged negligence that allowed the doctor’s prior complaint to go unaddressed. A First Information Report has been filed, and efforts are underway to apprehend the two accused individuals, Gopal Badne and Prashant Bankar, who are currently absconding.
