In a bold counterstrike, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has vowed to initiate defamation lawsuits against Congress heavyweights Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel, Jitendra Singh Alwar, and Debabrata Saikia. The announcement, made via social media on Wednesday, sets February 9 as the start date for civil and criminal proceedings.

The CM’s response stems from a recent press event where these leaders allegedly peddled lies and character assassination against him. Sarma challenged them directly: “If you have any courage or proof, prove every allegation in court.”

Labeling their tactics as ‘planned defamation and political drama,’ Sarma refused to be intimidated. He pointed fingers at the Gandhi family’s influence, suggesting the attacks were scripted from the top.

At the heart of the controversy is Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s unveiling of hallsHBS.com, a website purportedly dedicated to exposing Sarma’s public record through documents and videos. Launched with Bhupesh Baghel by his side, Gogoi framed it as a push for accountability to Assam’s voters.

The party is amplifying this with printed pamphlets for mass distribution across the state, part of a broader campaign for public engagement. Baghel reinforced the narrative, calling accountability essential to democratic health.

Sarma, undeterred, declared an end to ‘attack and flee’ politics. This high-stakes legal battle promises to test the opposition’s claims under judicial scrutiny, potentially shifting power dynamics in Assam’s volatile political landscape.

With elections looming, Sarma’s move signals a zero-tolerance approach to mudslinging, urging rivals to elevate debate beyond baseless accusations.
