The Indian government has sanctioned the acquisition of 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. This decision, finalized during a high-level meeting on August 19, will facilitate the production of these aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This marks the second order for the LCA Mark 1A fighters, following a prior order for 83 aircraft, valued at approximately Rs 48,000 crore. The acquisition is intended to replace the MiG-21 fleet, which is slated for phasing out in the coming weeks. This indigenous fighter aircraft program, fully supported by the Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters, is anticipated to significantly boost indigenization and offer substantial business opportunities to small and medium enterprises within the defense sector. The government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been actively promoting the revival of HAL, which has secured orders for the development of various indigenous fighter aircraft, helicopters, and their engines.
