India has vehemently rejected a United Nations report concerning refugees from Myanmar, labeling its observations as ‘biased and baseless.’ The report, authored by a UN expert, suggested that Myanmar refugees in India were experiencing ‘severe pressure’ following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. India’s representative at the UN General Assembly, MP Dilip Saikia, strongly condemned the report’s claims, particularly its alleged ‘communal lens’ when referencing the Pahalgam incident. Saikia emphasized that no individuals from Myanmar were involved in the attack, calling the UN expert’s analysis ‘blinkered’ and dependent on unverified media reports. He urged the Special Rapporteur to avoid relying on skewed information that aims to tarnish India’s image as a nation where people of all faiths coexist. India reiterated its commitment to a Myanmar-led peace process, advocating for dialogue, an end to violence, and the restoration of democracy. The report also touched upon India’s handling of Rohingya refugees, with the UN expert seeking further information on detentions and deportations.
