The Indian Air Force is poised to significantly enhance its capabilities. The Ministry of Defence recently approved a substantial defense procurement plan, valued at $7.64 billion, which includes 110 BrahMos-A air-launched supersonic cruise missiles and 87 heavy drones. This deal promises a considerable boost to India’s aerial strike capabilities and strategic strength.

The BrahMos-A was deployed in combat for the first time during the recent Operation Sindoor. The missile precisely targeted and neutralized key airbases and runways of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). This historic performance demonstrated the missile’s ability to strike deep into enemy territory under any circumstances.

    What is BrahMos-A?

The BrahMos-A is the air-launched variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, under the BrahMos Aerospace. Its name is derived from the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers.

It boasts a speed of Mach 2.8 to 3.0, approximately three times the speed of sound. It can strike targets over a distance exceeding 450 km, with the extended version potentially reaching a range of 800 km. The missile operates on a fire-and-forget principle, meaning it independently tracks and hits its target after launch.

    Lethal Combination with Sukhoi

The BrahMos-A is launched from the Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft. The missile can carry a high-explosive warhead weighing between 200 to 300 kg. Its unique features include the ability to fly at altitudes of 15 km and strike as low as 10 meters above the ground. Its low radar signature makes it extremely difficult to track and intercept.

    Why is it special?

It travels at three times the speed of sound. It has a range of 450 to 800 km. It can accurately strike targets on both land and sea. It has the capability to operate in any weather conditions. It is capable of evading enemy air defense systems.

    Elevating India’s Air Power

This deal will provide a new dimension to India’s air power. The combination of BrahMos-A and heavy drones will provide India with a strategic advantage and ensure the ability to accurately destroy enemy targets from long distances when needed. The Indian Air Force will possess a formidable weapon capable of deadly strikes from air to air, air to ground, and air to sea, serving as a strong message to any potential threat.
