The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to significantly enhance its aerial combat capabilities with the upcoming induction of approximately 700 Astra Mark 2 air-to-air missiles. This advanced missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will boast a range exceeding 200 kilometers, providing IAF pilots with an unprecedented strike reach. The proposal for these powerful missiles is currently under review by the Ministry of Defence and is expected to be integrated with the IAF’s Sukhoi and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) fleets. This development marks a crucial step in India’s pursuit of indigenous defence self-reliance, particularly in the realm of Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat. The enhanced range of the Astra Mark 2 is a direct response to the evolving geopolitical landscape and the need to maintain a technological edge. This move comes after recent aerial engagements where India demonstrated its ability to engage targets at considerable distances, underscoring the growing importance of long-range air-to-air missile technology.
