Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is set to assume the esteemed position of President of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). The official handover is scheduled for December 3, 2025, in Stockholm, Sweden. This appointment marks a significant global acknowledgement of India’s robust democratic framework and the Election Commission of India’s dedication to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. Kumar expressed his pride, stating that this invitation by 37 democratic nations is a testament to India’s successful electoral processes over its 30-year history. He highlighted this as a moment of great honor for all Indian citizens and election officials. International IDEA, an inter-governmental organization founded in 1995, is committed to bolstering democratic processes globally and currently comprises 35 member states, with the U.S. and Japan as observers. India, a founding member, actively engages in the organization’s research, capacity building, and training initiatives. With over 900 million eligible voters, India brings unparalleled electoral experience to the international arena, aiming to share best practices and innovations with Election Management Bodies worldwide during its 2026 presidency.
