The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has achieved a historic feat in the force’s mountaineering history. A first-ever all-women team successfully scaled Mount Nun (7,135 m) in the Nun-Kun mountain range of Kargil, marking a significant milestone in the ITBP’s distinguished tradition of high-altitude expeditions. The expedition was flagged off from ITBP headquarters in New Delhi on July 3, 2025, by Rahul Rasgotra, IPS, Director General, ITBP. The team underwent rigorous training in Leh, Ladakh, for approximately a month, focusing on acclimatization and technical preparedness. The first rope team, consisting of 7 mountaineers and 3 technical members, reached the summit of Mount Nun on August 13, 2025, at 09:25 AM, after departing from the summit camp the previous night. The second rope team, comprising 7 mountaineers and 2 technical members, reached the summit on August 14, 2025, at 08:50 AM, completing the historic achievement. Mount Nun, the highest peak in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, is known for its challenging terrain, including steep mixed ice-rock formations, knife-edge ridges, crevassed glaciers, icy walls, and unpredictable weather. It serves as a recognized training ground for 8,000-meter expeditions, demanding exceptional endurance, technical skill, and strategic planning. With the success of this historic all-women expedition, the ITBP has further solidified its mountaineering legacy. The force has successfully ascended six of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, including Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga, and has achieved successful ascents of Mount Everest five times. This adventurous expedition on Mount Nun symbolizes the force’s excellence, empowerment, leadership, and proficiency in high-altitude operations.
