Intense rainfall has battered Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh over the past day, leading to widespread alerts and precautionary measures. The Chenab River’s water level has risen significantly, prompting warnings for residents, especially in the Doda district, to stay away from its banks. Tragically, initial reports suggest potential casualties in Doda due to the swollen river, with authorities launching investigations to assess the full impact. The Baglihar and Salal dams have overflowed, resulting in gate openings to manage excess water and minimize downstream flooding risks. In Ladakh’s Kargil district, a flash flood and landslide occurred in the Stakpa area, though fortunately, there were no major damages or injuries reported. The Meteorological Department anticipates continued rainfall in the Jammu division for the next 24 hours, urging caution near water bodies. Srinagar, particularly the Soura area, has also been affected, with water seepage damaging homes and causing disruption.
