109-Year-Old Jeetpur Coal Mine in Jharkhand Shuts Down Due to Safety Concerns

The Jeetpur coal mine in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, a relic of 109 years, has been completely shut down by the SAIL management due to safety concerns. General Manager Manish Kumar posted a notice regarding the closure. While the mine was effectively closed on April 23, 2024, essential services continued until Tuesday when all operations ceased. The closure is attributed to water accumulation issues from the neighboring Tata Steel’s Jamadoba 6/7 pits and 2 pits collieries, which were shut down causing water to seep into the Jeetpur mine. Directore of DGMS and SINFAR directed SAIL to stop sending workers to Jeetpur. The mine, which employed 145 workers, is expected to see their transfer to other locations. The closure of the Jeetpur Colliery is expected to impact the local communities of Nonikdih, Jeetpur, and the Jamadoba market. The mine, since its inception, was a producer of steel-grade coal.
