Continuous heavy rainfall, spanning 30 hours, has wreaked havoc in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for over 15 districts in the state. The incessant downpour has severely disrupted daily life, turning major roads, low-lying areas, and neighborhoods into submerged zones. Roads have transformed into veritable ponds, making vehicular movement a significant challenge.
The severity of waterlogging on Ranchi’s roads is such that vehicles appear to be navigating through a lake rather than a roadway. On Monday evening, a particularly severe incident occurred near the Kantatoli flyover, where the main road between Kantatoli and Bahu Bazaar was completely inundated due to the heavy rain. A white Scorpio car, caught in this scenario, plunged directly into a water-filled pothole.
Fortunately, with the assistance of local residents, the occupants of the car were promptly rescued, averting a potential disaster. The video of the Scorpio’s submersion has rapidly circulated on social media. The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for rain in Ranchi and more than 15 other districts for the next 24 to 48 hours.
The department has advised the public to exercise caution due to the threat of lightning strikes during the intense rainfall. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives in Heselpiri village, under the Budhmu police station area of Ranchi, on Sunday evening when they were struck by lightning during the storm. The deceased have been identified as Bal Govind Mahato and Udaynath Mahato. The incident occurred as they were returning home with their livestock.
