Khunti district authorities have cracked down on the illegal sand trade in the Jariagarh area, seizing six high-capacity trucks laden with sand early Wednesday morning. The operation, conducted by Jariagarh police near Buxpur, targeted vehicles involved in the illicit transportation of sand, a long-standing issue plaguing the region. The seized trucks, with registration numbers JH01FD 2807, JH01 0634, JH01FR 0106, JH01FR 1260, JH01FM 1402, and JH02BQ 3032, have been impounded at the police station. Further legal proceedings are underway to address this persistent illegal activity. The Jariagarh region has been identified as a hotspot for illegal sand mining and transportation for an extended period. Despite opposition from local villagers, the involvement of some residents has been noted, facilitating this underground economy. The recent action followed an attempt by some villagers to intercept sand-laden vehicles late Tuesday night, prompting a joint raid by forest department officials and police. While several other drivers managed to escape with their vehicles, loaded or empty, the police successfully apprehended six trucks. Locals have praised the initiative but emphasized the need for sustained efforts to completely curb the illegal sand trade in Jariagarh, calling for regular enforcement actions.
