The Chief Secretary of Jharkhand, Alka Tiwari, has ordered a statewide survey of transgenders to facilitate their access to government schemes. This directive was issued during a meeting of the Jharkhand Transgender Welfare Board held at Project Bhavan on Tuesday. The survey aims to determine the district-wise population of transgenders, their needs, and their preferences. This information will be crucial for allocating funds and resources for their welfare and integrating them into various schemes designed for their benefit. The meeting also highlighted the reluctance of transgenders to openly identify themselves, hindering their access to essential services like identity cards, reservations, pension schemes, Ayushman cards, and Garima Griha. To address this, the Chief Secretary emphasized the prompt formation of district-level committees, headed by deputy commissioners, in all districts. Furthermore, the establishment of a “Transgender Support Unit” by the board was announced. This unit will address issues related to transgenders and propose solutions. According to the 2011 census, the total transgender population in India is 4,87,803, with 13,463 residing in Jharkhand. The government implements various welfare schemes for this community, supported by the Transgender Welfare Board, which collaborates with different departments in the creation and execution of these programs. The board meeting, chaired by the Chief Secretary, was attended by other officials, including the Home Secretary Vandana Dadel, Secretary of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Manoj Kumar, Finance Secretary Prashant Kumar, and Rural Development Secretary K. Srinivasan.
