Tragedy struck in the Giridih district of Jharkhand early Monday morning when a herd of wild elephants attacked villagers. The brutal assault, which occurred in Gadi village within the Birni police station area, resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a woman, and left another woman critically injured.

The deceased have been identified as Shanti Devi and Bodhi Pandit. The critically injured woman, Sudama Devi from Pesham village, is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital in Giridih.

According to local officials who visited the scene, Shanti Devi and Bodhi Pandit were on their way to their threshing ground when they were trampled by a migrating herd of elephants. Sudama Devi was reportedly thrown by an elephant, sustaining severe injuries. Forest department officials and police promptly arrived at the location after being alerted.

The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Giridih, Manish Tiwari, confirmed that the attack happened as residents were venturing out for morning ablutions. He assured that initial compensation has been provided to the affected families, and further processes are underway. Efforts are actively being made by a dedicated team to safely guide the elephant herd away from the populated area. The injured woman’s treatment continues.
