The ancient Martand Sun Temple in Anantnag was aglow with tradition and unity this Diwali, as Kashmiri Pandits celebrated the festival of lights with immense devotion. The historic Surya Mandir in Mattan served as the focal point for the community’s age-old Diwali rituals.

This year’s celebration was particularly special, marked by the heartwarming participation of local Muslims, reinforcing centuries of brotherhood and communal harmony in Kashmir. The temple complex and its surroundings were illuminated with countless diyas and festive lights, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

Residents from Anantnag town also joined the festivities, sharing sweets and warm greetings, embodying the spirit of togetherness. The annual gesture of unity, with Muslims joining the Pandit celebrations at the Sun Temple, has become a cherished tradition, symbolizing friendship and mutual respect.

The central Lakshmi Puja commenced on the auspicious Amavasya tithi, followed by continued rituals and gatherings throughout the evening. The Martand Tirath Trust highlights the temple’s unique significance, believed to be the birthplace of the Sun, making Diwali observances here especially potent.

Beyond the religious ceremonies, this year’s event stood as a powerful symbol of hope, reflecting the community’s aspirations for the restoration of normalcy and the return of the vibrant harmony that once characterized Kashmir.
