A new chapter in Punjab’s aviation history unfolds on February 1 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Halwara Airport virtually during his state visit. Located in Ludhiana, this greenfield airport addresses a critical gap in regional air infrastructure.

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain shared that the site is inspection-ready and primed for service. ‘We’ve received formal confirmation via call and letter from airport authorities,’ he noted. Flights will roll out right post-inauguration, linking Ludhiana to key domestic and international destinations.

Business communities are ecstatic, viewing this as fulfillment of decades-old demands. Ludhiana, India’s knitwear capital, has struggled with poor air access, deterring overseas clients who faced lengthy road trips from major airports. Now, seamless connectivity will streamline supply chains and negotiations.

Industry experts predict exponential growth in sectors like garments, bicycles, and machine tools. ‘Faster access means quicker deals and expanded markets,’ opined a chamber of commerce representative. The airport could generate thousands of jobs in aviation, hospitality, and logistics, while elevating Punjab’s GDP contribution.

Beyond economics, Halwara will ease passenger movement for medical tourism to Ludhiana’s renowned hospitals and cultural events. As preparations peak, the focus shifts to sustainable operations, with modern amenities ensuring efficiency. This inauguration marks Modi’s commitment to Tier-2 city development, propelling Ludhiana onto the national aviation map.
