A significant development has occurred in Manipur ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s potential visit on September 13th. The Kuki-Zo Council has decided to reopen National Highway-2, which had been closed. This decision comes after successful negotiations between the Kuki-Zo Council and the Ministry of Home Affairs, leading to agreements concerning the reopening of the highway, peace restoration, and other key issues within the state. This is a crucial step, especially considering the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit. The Ministry of Home Affairs has been engaged in discussions with various groups involved in the Manipur violence for several months to facilitate peace. National Highway-2 is considered the lifeline of Manipur, connecting Imphal, the capital, with towns like Kangpokpi and Churachandpur. Churachandpur has a significant Kuki population, and the highway was closed by the community following ethnic clashes in the region.
