Opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has intensified its call for a central investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the police sub-inspector recruitment examination in Odisha. The youth and students’ wings of the BJD staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding a thorough probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). BJD leaders have voiced strong concerns that the recruitment process has been marred by a ‘cash for job’ scam, deeply impacting the aspirations of young individuals in the state. They accuse the state government of attempting to shield influential figures by entrusting the investigation to the Crime Branch instead of an independent agency like the CBI. The BJD further questioned the legality of engaging private agencies for conducting crucial government recruitment exams, alleging a systematic plan to commercialize public sector job opportunities. Plans for a statewide demonstration have been announced to highlight these grievances. Thousands of aspiring candidates, who invested significant time and effort in preparing for these positions, are reportedly feeling demoralized by the unfolding scandal. The recruitment drive for 933 sub-inspector posts attracted over 1.53 lakh applicants. The written test, originally scheduled for October 5th and 6th, was postponed following the arrest of 117 individuals in Berhampur, many of whom allegedly paid substantial sums to secure jobs. The arrests included aspirants and suspected brokers involved in facilitating the alleged bribery scheme. While the Chief Minister has assured strict action against those found responsible, the BJD insists on a CBI inquiry to ensure transparency and accountability.
