Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Imphal, Manipur, on a Saturday afternoon in May 2023, marking his first visit to the state since the outbreak of ethnic violence. Upon his arrival, heavy rainfall prevented him from taking a helicopter to Churachandpur, a predominantly Kuki area. Instead, he opted for a road journey. During his visit, PM Modi addressed a gathering in Churachandpur, emphasizing the central government’s commitment to standing with the people of Manipur. He stated that the government is working towards making the conflict-ridden state a symbol of peace and prosperity. The road journey from Imphal to the rally site took approximately one and a half hours. Despite the rain, PM Modi chose to travel by car to Churachandpur, ensuring he could interact with the public. He described this journey as memorable. He highlighted that a new dawn is rising in Manipur. During the public meeting in the Kuki-dominated Churachandpur district, PM Modi described Manipur as a land of hope and aspiration, acknowledging that the violence had cast a shadow over the beautiful region. He shared his recent meeting with affected people in a relief camp, adding that he now believes a new dawn of hope and faith is breaking in Manipur. Speaking about peace in Manipur, PM Modi said that peace is essential for development to take root anywhere. He mentioned that many conflicts and disputes in the Northeast region have been resolved in the last 11 years. He urged all groups and organizations to choose the path of peace. PM Modi highlighted the central government’s efforts for the development of the northeastern state. He mentioned that earlier, decisions made in Delhi used to take decades to reach here, but now Manipur is progressing with the rest of the country. A medical college has now been established in Churachandpur. PM Modi laid the foundation for projects worth over ₹7,300 crore. He said these projects would improve the lives of the people of Manipur, especially those living in the hilly areas. He also added that he would never forget the love he received during his road journey from Imphal to Churachandpur, which is about 60 kilometers away. During his visit, PM Modi also met with people displaced by the ethnic violence in the state, listening to their problems and grievances.
