Security forces gained the upper hand in a prolonged firefight with Naxalites in Jharkhand’s Saranda jungle on Thursday, resulting in multiple rebel casualties and a haul of arms and explosives. The operation, still underway as of this report, underscores the relentless pursuit of Maoist insurgents in the region’s forested terrains.

Triggered by secret inputs on militant movements in Kumbhidih village, a combined force ventured into the challenging terrain early morning. Ambushed by the waiting Naxals, the troops responded with precision, turning the tide over several hours of intense combat.

Authorities have sealed the perimeter, deploying reinforcements to prevent escapes. DIG Kolhan Anuranjan Kispotta assured updates post-operation, while IG Michael Raj highlighted heavy damage to the enemy ranks amid sporadic shooting.

Unverified intelligence points to the elimination of a high-value target carrying a Rs 50 lakh reward, accompanied by other wanted cadres. Recovered items include corpses, firearms, ammo caches, and survival gear, pointing to a significant blow to the Naxal network.

Contextually, anti-Naxal efforts have accelerated lately. The previous year saw 25+ militants killed statewide, with notable successes in Chaibasa’s Tonto and Goilkera in mid-2025. This 2026 encounter reinforces the momentum against insurgency in Jharkhand.
