Reports indicate that Prime Minister Modi may visit Manipur on September 13th. This would be his first visit to the state since the outbreak of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. In anticipation of the visit and to ensure security, the government has imposed a ban on air guns in the Churachandpur district. However, there has been no official confirmation of the PM’s scheduled visit. Churachandpur District Magistrate Dharun Kumar issued an order prohibiting the use, carrying, or display of air guns within the district, citing security concerns related to the Prime Minister’s visit. He warned that anyone found violating the order would face immediate legal action. The government order stated that the visit aims to facilitate a successful event with comprehensive security measures. The presence of air guns could potentially cause alarm and pose a security risk. Therefore, the use or possession of air guns is strictly prohibited. The order specifies that any individual found violating the directive will be subject to appropriate legal action. The Superintendent of Police of Churachandpur will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the order. While the visit is expected, no official statement has been released from New Delhi or Imphal. Despite the lack of official announcements, several meetings have been held in the state in preparation for the visit. Churachandpur is a stronghold of the Kuki tribal community. The ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023 led to the resignation of the CM and the imposition of President’s rule. Over 250 people were killed, and many were displaced in the violence. This visit would be Prime Minister Modi’s first to Manipur following the unrest.
