Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has officially been designated as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. This appointment follows a period of significant political transition in the state, including the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan as the new Assembly prepares for its formation post-elections.

The RJD’s choice for LoP comes after their alliance secured a modest 35 seats in the recent Bihar Assembly elections, with the RJD itself claiming 25 of those. Tejashwi Yadav, re-elected from the Raghopur constituency, will be taking on the role of LoP for the second time. This move is seen against the backdrop of the Mahagathbandhan’s performance in the polls, where the NDA, led by Nitish Kumar, achieved a substantial victory.

The NDA alliance secured a commanding 202 seats in the 243-seat assembly, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading as the largest single party with 89 seats. The Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) secured 85 seats, contributing significantly to the NDA’s success. In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan, comprising the RJD, Indian National Congress (INC), CPI(ML)(L), and CPI(M), managed to secure only 35 seats collectively.
