Panic gripped Tendukheda in Damoh district when sanitation workers stumbled upon a heartbreaking sight: a mother and her infant son lifeless in a public well. The incident, unfolding early Saturday in Ward No. 1 under the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction, has prompted a thorough police probe into whether depression, accident, or something sinister led to this double tragedy.

Eyewitnesses recounted how the cleaners spotted the floating bodies during their morning rounds and wasted no time notifying the police. A swift response from SDOP Archana Ahir, SHO Ravendra Bagri, and their team ensured the bodies—identified as 35-year-old Jayanti Kevat from Jharoli and her three-month-old Devansh—were recovered promptly. Post inquest, they were dispatched for autopsy.

Jayanti’s relative, Siya Rani, revealed the timeline: the mother had arrived for her brother’s terahvi ceremony and vanished at 2 a.m. Despite frantic searches till dawn, she remained missing until the grim discovery at 6 a.m. Her laborer husband is devastated, compounded by her long-term illness and the prior loss of two other children.

As forensic details emerge, investigators are leaving no stone unturned, interviewing family and neighbors. The case highlights ongoing rural challenges like mental health support amid personal hardships. Community leaders call for better vigilance around public wells, while police assure a fair inquiry to deliver justice and closure to the grieving family.
