Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have increased security measures due to the concurrent observance of Muharram processions and the Kanwar Yatra across several districts, including Sambhal, Lucknow, and Moradabad. The state administration is focused on ensuring peace and preventing any incidents during this period.

Significant numbers of people are participating in Muharram processions throughout the state. Police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, with the use of drones and CCTV cameras for monitoring. In Sambhal, District Magistrate Dr. Rajender Pensiya highlighted peace committee meetings at various levels, addressing community concerns related to essential services. Magistrates and police officers are stationed at procession locations, with a ‘box format’ approach for processions, drone surveillance, and the integration of over 13,000 CCTV cameras. Action is being taken to ban over 900 individuals, and Section 163 is in effect.

In Lucknow’s western zone, also known as Old Lucknow, extra precautions are being implemented. DCP Vishwajeet Srivastava detailed the layered security arrangements, including box formations, route management, and key location security. Eighty-two CCTV cameras have been installed, and Civil Defence Organisation volunteers are assisting. Three types of drones are in use, and the social media team is actively communicating with religious leaders.

In Moradabad, District Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh stated that proactive steps are being taken to ensure peaceful observance of both Muharram and the Kanwar Yatra. Peace Committee meetings were conducted, and instructions were given regarding procession elements. Preparations for the Kanwar Yatra route are underway, including road improvements and camera installations. Individuals with a history of negative involvement are being identified, and DJs have been instructed to control volume levels.
