A protest in Nandurbar, Maharashtra, against the murder of a tribal youth turned violent. Thousands of people from the tribal community marched towards the collector’s office, but some groups unexpectedly initiated stone-pelting and vandalism. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, escalating the protest into a violent demonstration. According to eyewitnesses, protesters targeted government vehicles parked within the collectorate premises, causing significant damage.
Police intervened with a lathi charge and tear gas to control the situation. Several police officers and protesters were injured in the clash and were admitted to Nandurbar District Hospital. The protesters demanded strict punishment for the perpetrators of the recent murder of the tribal youth. Several organizations called for the death penalty for the accused. In addition, demands were made for appropriate compensation and security for the victim’s family.
Law enforcement has stated that some individuals involved in the violence have been detained, and a thorough investigation into the entire matter is underway. In light of the rising tensions in the district, the administration has deployed additional police forces.
