Sonu Nigam, the voice behind countless Bollywood hits, is making waves with his contributions to ‘Border 2’, the sequel to the iconic 1997 war drama. Singing three out of the film’s seven songs, Nigam has infused them with raw emotion that resonates deeply with audiences.
Posting a personal video on Instagram, the singer opened up about his long association with ‘Border’. From attending its premiere as a young artist to returning for the sequel nearly three decades later, Nigam called it a ‘dreamlike journey’. ‘Border isn’t just a movie; it’s the true story of national pride, captured with the same fervor as on the warfront,’ he noted, praising the producers and cast for their dedication.
The video took a pivotal turn as Nigam responded to Javed Akhtar’s critique on remaking songs from the original. Agreeing in principle, he argued, ‘Recreating old tracks isn’t the best approach, but ‘Sandese Aate Hain’ is ‘Border’s soul—its very uniform. Imagining the film without it is impossible.’
To respect Akhtar’s vision for originality, the team crafted ‘Mitti Ke Bete’, a profoundly moving track depicting the anguish of families longing for lost soldiers. ‘It’s our tribute, blending respect for the past with new emotions,’ Nigam explained.
This exchange highlights ongoing debates in Indian cinema about preserving musical heritage versus creating anew. With ‘Border 2’ promising to stir patriotic fervor, Nigam’s stance positions him as a bridge between eras, ensuring the film’s soundtrack immortalizes both legacy and freshness.
