Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday strongly condemned the remarks of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat over India’s Independence and said that the “history of our country cannot change anytime at the whims of any political party or an organisation.”

Bhagwat has quoted controversy for equating the consecration of Ram temple in Ayodhya with the attainment of “true independence” by India. The Bengal CM observed that such comments about the country were anti- nationalistic. “This is a dangerous comment and it should be taken back,” she said. She further slammed the central government for trying to distort history. “We are dedicated to keep our independence and India is a sovereign country which was established on August 15, 1947,” Banerjee said.

“India is our pride. It is a Republic and the democracy of the country is our pride,” Banerjee said. “India is a sovereign country and it was established on August 15, 1947. Many patriots have sacrificed their lives and brought independence to us,” Banerjee said.

Banerjee spoke about various freedom fighters, including Lal Bal Pal, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Bhagat Singh and there were so many freedom fighters, who have sacrificed their lives for the country.”India has been declared as a sovereign, democratic country… multi-faceted culture is the strength of our country with multiple languages,” Banerjee said.Reacting to Banerjee’s comments, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said that the RSS is an independent organisation and it is well equipped to reply to the comments.
