Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to rejoin the Indian cricket team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. Their inclusion has sparked discussions about their future, especially with the 2027 World Cup looming and questions regarding their long-term viability in the format. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar responded to inquiries surrounding Virat Kohli’s fitness test, which had been a subject of debate. Standard fitness assessments are typically conducted at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) and Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where players like Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj underwent tests. Kohli’s absence from these tests raised questions, but a report indicated he had been permitted to complete his fitness tests privately in London, with the results subsequently submitted to the CoE. This led to criticism, with some accusing the BCCI of favoritism. At a press conference, Agarkar clarified the situation, aiming to dispel any controversy. He stated that both Kohli and Sharma had met the required fitness standards. Agarkar mentioned that he was not informed of any other details and confirmed that the players chosen for selection had been declared fit and available. Both players are eager to perform well to prove their value to the team and potentially extend their careers to include another World Cup appearance in 2027.
