Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews recently retired from Test cricket, marking the end of a distinguished career. Mathews, who played his final Test at the Galle International Stadium, holds a unique and unfortunate record: he is the only batter in the world to be dismissed on both 99 and 199 in Test matches. This highlights both his talent and the near misses that punctuated his career. In 2009, he was out for 99 against India in Mumbai, and in 2022, he fell for 199 against Bangladesh in Chattogram. Mathews retires as the third-highest run-scorer in Test history for Sri Lanka, with 8167 runs at an average of 44.62, including 16 centuries. He played 118 Tests, showcasing remarkable consistency and durability, joining an elite group of Sri Lankan cricketers who have played over 100 Test matches.
