The Asia Cup 2025, scheduled from September 9 to 28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, is expected to be heavily impacted by dew, altering the conditions for teams playing under lights. According to former Dubai curator Tony Hemming, who spent nearly a decade preparing pitches in the UAE, batting becomes considerably easier in the evening due to the heavy dew. High humidity is typical in the Gulf region during September, leading to rapid dew accumulation as temperatures drop, making the ball slippery and difficult for bowlers. Former India all-rounder and UAE head coach Robin Singh, has emphasized the importance of dew as a determining factor in this year’s Asia Cup, suggesting that teams winning the toss should elect to bowl first.

When a team sets a score, such as 200 runs, their bowlers often use cross-seam deliveries. If the ball hits the shiny side, it will travel quickly. If it hits the seam, the ball will grip. The new ball may initially carry, but after ten overs, it softens and holds up due to the moisture on the pitch caused by the dew. The ball will absorb moisture through the seam area, as this area lacks a lacquer coating.

Historical data supports these observations. Chasing totals in night games at UAE stadiums has often been challenging. During the second round of IPL 2021, only 4 out of 13 matches in Dubai were easily chased. Similarly, in the 2021 T20 World Cup, chasing teams won 12 out of 13 matches at the Dubai International Stadium. Even though Abu Dhabi offered more balance, dew still affected the results.

India will begin its campaign against the UAE on September 10, followed by a match against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai. Given the role of dew, chasing under lights could be pivotal in determining the winner of the Asia Cup trophy.
