In a swift squad adjustment, New Zealand Cricket has named fast bowler Ben Sears as the reserve for their T20 World Cup campaign, which gets underway on February 7 across India and Sri Lanka. The announcement came Friday, just ahead of Sears linking up with the team in Mumbai on Sunday.
The decision follows a chain of injuries: Adam Milne’s hamstring issue from SA20 led to Kyle Jamieson’s inclusion last week, and now Sears replaces Jamieson in the reserves. Scans revealed the extent of Milne’s injury, forcing him out of contention.
Sears, who has been starring for Wellington Firebirds in Super Smash, impressed with 15 wickets from nine outings, tying for second in the round-robin phase. Coach Rob Walter highlighted his resilience after overcoming a similar hamstring setback.
“It’s fantastic to have Ben back playing at a high level after his dedicated rehab,” Walter noted. “His full campaign with the Firebirds showcased his wicket-taking ability, and he’ll be ready to step up if needed in India.”
Drawn in Group D with Afghanistan, Canada, South Africa, and UAE, New Zealand opens against the Afghans in Chennai on February 8. The main squad boasts Mitchell Santner (c), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert, and Ish Sodhi.
With Sears now in the mix, New Zealand’s pace attack gains flexibility. This move underscores the team’s proactive approach to squad management in the high-stakes tournament, positioning them well for potential disruptions.
