India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak was observed engaging in an intense discussion with young cricketer Sai Sudharsan following his dismissal just short of a century against West Indies. The second Test, commencing October 10, saw Sudharsan fall for 87 runs off 165 balls. This knock was crucial for India, especially given the scrutiny the 23-year-old Tamil Nadu batsman had faced after a lean run in his initial Test appearances.

Despite a challenging first Test where he scored only seven, Sudharsan seized the opportunity in the second match. He built a significant partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who went on to score an unbeaten 173. Sudharsan reached his fifty off 87 deliveries, demonstrating resilience and a determined approach.

His innings concluded with a sharp delivery from spinner Jomel Warrican that breached his defense. A subsequent review confirmed the ball would have hit the stumps, ending Sudharsan’s promising knock. Post-dismissal, Kotak was seen on the balcony, apparently dissecting the specific error that led to Sudharsan’s downfall, offering direct coaching.

Reflecting on his performance, Sudharsan mentioned his mindset was focused on contributing and building partnerships rather than just accumulating personal milestones. He expressed gratitude for his runs but also a desire to convert starts into bigger scores. He also lauded Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive batting from the other end.

India finished Day 1 strongly at 318/2, with Sudharsan’s 87 being a vital contribution. This performance reinforces the team management’s faith in the young player. Batting mentor Ryan ten Doeschate had previously emphasized the competitive nature of securing a spot in the Indian team and expressed confidence in Sudharsan’s ability to cement his position at number three. Kotak’s guidance aims to help Sudharsan overcome minor tactical errors and solidify his place in the middle order.
