Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena found himself at the center of a heated discussion during the opening day of the India-England Test match. The incident occurred during the first session and involved a controversial decision that drew criticism from fans and experts.

The moment in question occurred in the 13th over of India’s innings. England bowler Josh Tongue delivered a ball that hit Indian batter Sai Sudharsan on the pads. Dharmasena, the on-field umpire, turned down the appeal, which was later confirmed to be the correct decision as replays showed an inside edge. However, Dharmasena’s gesture to the England fielders before the review window closed has been widely criticized. He appeared to indicate that the ball had hit the bat, which may have influenced England captain Ollie Pope’s decision not to review.

Social media erupted with reactions, with many accusing Dharmasena of overstepping his role. Critics argued that umpires should not offer any explanation for their decisions before the fielding side decides whether to use DRS. Former England captain Michael Atherton also weighed in, suggesting India might feel aggrieved.

Earlier in the day, England successfully reviewed a decision against Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Although Dharmasena’s call was technically correct, his gesture has raised questions about impartiality and the boundaries of an umpire’s role.
