South African cricketer Senuran Muthusamy achieved a career milestone on Sunday, marking his maiden Test century against India in Guwahati. The 31-year-old all-rounder, recently recognized as ICC Player of the Month, reached the three-figure mark with a resilient 109 off 206 deliveries. Playing at the Barsapara Stadium, Muthusamy found strong support from wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne and the formidable Marco Jansen, who provided crucial partnerships. The packed stadium witnessed a historic moment as Muthusamy expressed his delight in contributing significantly to the team’s first innings total. He described the feeling of scoring a century in front of a large crowd as ‘really special,’ emphasizing the importance of setting a solid foundation. Muthusamy, born in Durban, has South Indian Tamil roots and represents the ‘Born Free’ generation of South Africa. His journey in cricket began at school level, eventually leading him to a professional career after pursuing a degree in media and marketing. He has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket, representing KwaZulu-Natal and the Dolphins franchise. His international career began with a Test debut against India in 2019, where he notably dismissed Virat Kohli. Despite early challenges, Muthusamy has staged a strong comeback, cementing his place in the Proteas squad with his valuable all-round contributions and economical spin bowling, particularly effective in subcontinental conditions.
