Following a challenging third day in the Guwahati Test against South Africa, Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar addressed the team’s batting collapse. South Africa established a commanding 314-run first-innings lead after India was dismissed for just 201. Sundar, who top-scored with a gritty 48 from the No. 8 position, urged for a positive outlook despite the difficult situation. He acknowledged that while aggressive shots from captain Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel didn’t pay off, such attempts can also lead to success on another day. “Obviously, execution didn’t go the way we wanted,” Sundar stated in the post-day press interaction. He emphasized that backing players’ plans and skill sets is crucial, as past performances show their capabilities. Sundar also spoke about his flexibility in batting order, expressing happiness to play wherever the team requires, highlighting the tactical nature of Test cricket. He added that there wasn’t a specific run-rate or session goal, with the focus being on playing a conventional Test innings, especially against a strong bowling attack. The team had hoped to bat deeper into the match, planning for subsequent days if more wickets hadn’t fallen.
