Veteran Indian bowlers coach Morne Morkel has strongly suggested that stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could still be integral to India’s squad for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. Morkel emphasized that their immense experience and proven track record in high-stakes tournaments are invaluable assets that cannot be easily replaced. This statement comes amidst ongoing speculation about the future of these legendary players, particularly after their recent retirements from Test cricket.

Both Kohli and Sharma have already stepped away from the T20 international format following last year’s World Cup triumph, leading to frequent discussions about their potential participation in the next ODI World Cup. However, Morkel highlighted the stability and winning mentality they bring to the team. “Sure, they are quality players,” Morkel stated in a recent press conference. “As long as they are happy to put the hard work in and maintain fitness. I have always believed that to have that experience, you can’t find it anywhere. They have won trophies, they know how to play big tournaments.”

He further added, “For sure, if they maintain their fitness and they physically feel their bodies can do that, it’s still a long way away, the World Cup.” The former fast bowler also addressed the team’s recent Test series defeat, noting the need to shift focus to white-ball cricket. “It was a disappointing two weeks for us. But we have had a couple of days to reflect. The important thing is to keep all our energy towards the white-ball team. We have been playing good white-ball cricket. A couple of fresh energy into the squad with Virat and Rohit coming back. Excited for the next couple of weeks playing white-ball cricket.”

Morkel also provided an update on injured players Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Gill, sidelined with a neck spasm, is recovering well, while Iyer has begun his rehabilitation process for a more serious injury. Morkel expressed optimism about their eventual return to the squad.
