In a significant development for Big Bash League fans, Babar Azam has cut short his stint with Sydney Sixers to return to Pakistan for national commitments. The decision comes just before the Challenger match in BBL 2025-26, leaving the team searching for momentum.

The move is tied to Pakistan’s busy schedule leading into T20 World Cup 2026. They open against Netherlands on February 7, preceded by a home T20 series against Australia from January 29. Azam’s recall underscores the priority of international duty amid the packed calendar.

Sydney Sixers swiftly named Daniel Hughes as Azam’s stand-in. Their statement highlighted the Pakistan skipper’s obligations: ‘Babar has been summoned back for national camp in preparation for forthcoming internationals. He won’t feature in the remaining BBL 15 playoff games.’

Grateful for his time down under, Azam shared an emotional video on the club’s X account. He praised the franchise, teammates, coaches, and the passionate Sydney crowd. ‘It was an absolute pleasure playing here. The fans’ support meant the world, and I’ll carry these memories back home,’ the batsman reflected.

Azam’s performance this BBL season left much to be desired. Across 11 outings, he managed 202 runs with a modest strike rate of 103.06, struggling to find rhythm in Australian conditions.

This departure not only impacts Sixers’ playoff hopes but also signals Pakistan’s focus on rebuilding form ahead of global events. As Azam shifts gears to international cricket, questions linger over his T20 striking power and the Sixers’ ability to adapt without him.
