Following India’s batting struggles against spin, particularly in the recent Test failure to chase a modest target, the spotlight has turned back to the rigorous Ranji Trophy. This domestic arena often hones players’ skills against challenging conditions and adept spin bowling. While IPL success sometimes overshadows domestic form, several Ranji Trophy stalwarts are consistently performing and warrant consideration for the national Test side. Here are three standout players whose current form makes a compelling case for an India Test cap.

Youngster Ravichandran Smaran from Karnataka is making significant strides. At just 22, he has already registered two double centuries this season. With 1073 runs in 19 first-class innings at an average exceeding 70, including four tons, Smaran has been a revelation. India’s persistent search for a stable number three batsman since Cheteshwar Pujara’s departure could find a promising solution in this prolific run-scorer.

Yash Rathod, also a top-order batsman from Vidarbha, has been in exceptional form for the past two seasons. He amassed 960 runs in the previous Ranji Trophy campaign and has continued his scoring spree with two centuries already this ongoing season. Across 42 first-class innings, Rathod averages nearly 60 with nine centuries, presenting himself as a strong contender at the age of 25.

Danish Malewar, another talent from Vidarbha, is also catching the eye. Though still early in his career at 22, his consistent performances are undeniable. He boasts over 1150 first-class runs at an average of 52.31, with three centuries. While he might need to sustain this high level of scoring over more seasons, his current trajectory suggests he’s a player to watch closely for future national selection.
