Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the reigning IPL champions, are facing a severe backlash from fans and the public following their decision to retain fast bowler Yash Dayal for the 2026 IPL season. This move comes despite Dayal being implicated in two serious criminal cases, including one under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Out of 17 players retained, Dayal’s inclusion has ignited a firestorm on social media, with many questioning the franchise’s judgment and ethical considerations while these grave allegations are still undergoing judicial review. The controversy deepens as Dayal faces accusations of sexual exploitation in Ghaziabad and charges under the POCSO Act in Jaipur, involving alleged abuse of a minor over a two-year period. The Rajasthan High Court’s rejection of his interim bail plea underscores the seriousness of the charges, while the Allahabad High Court has provided temporary protection in the Ghaziabad case. Fans have decried the decision as ‘tone-deaf’ and unacceptable, highlighting the contradiction with efforts to ensure a safe sporting environment. The situation is further complicated by Dayal’s prior suspension from the UPT20 League by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) due to the same allegations. This raises significant questions about RCB’s due diligence and their disregard for a state cricket body’s disciplinary action as the IPL auction looms, placing immense pressure on the defending champions to explain or reconsider their retention strategy.
