India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa, commencing November 22 in Guwahati. Rishabh Pant, the designated vice-captain, is set to lead the national side in this critical Freedom Trophy 2025 encounter. Gill sustained a neck injury during India’s first innings in Kolkata, forcing him to retire hurt after facing just three deliveries. He was promptly taken to the hospital for evaluation and did not return to bat, subsequently being declared unavailable for the remainder of the match. Initial reports suggest further concerns regarding Gill’s availability for the upcoming ODI series, with team management prioritizing his long-term fitness given a demanding international schedule. He may be rested as a precautionary measure to ensure his full recovery for future commitments. Should Gill miss the Guwahati Test, Pant will continue his captaincy as India aims to avert a series defeat, having lost the opening Test in Kolkata by 30 runs. The injury occurred on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test, seemingly a whiplash effect while attempting a boundary. Despite initial positive medical updates after his hospital discharge, Gill was later seen wearing a neck brace, indicating restricted movement. The BCCI confirmed he would travel with the squad to Guwahati, with a final decision on his participation to be made closer to the match. Nitish Kumar Reddy, a fast-bowling all-rounder, has joined the squad and could be considered for selection if Gill remains absent.
