Google is implementing significant changes to YouTube’s live streaming policies, with the aim of enhancing child safety. The new rules, effective July 22nd, raise the minimum age for live streaming from 13 to 16 years old. This shift means that individuals under 16 will no longer be able to independently host live streams. YouTube states that these updates are part of their ongoing efforts to protect minors and mitigate risks associated with online interactions.

Under the updated policy, adolescents under 16 can still participate in live streams, but only under specific conditions, such as co-streaming with an adult. If this condition is not met, YouTube may disable the live chat or remove the stream entirely. This policy change may pose challenges for young creators who wish to stream independently, as they will now need to involve a parent or adult channel manager. While the new restrictions may disappoint some aspiring youth, YouTube emphasizes that the safety of minors is their top priority.
