The forthcoming Apple event is set to showcase the iPhone Air, a device designed to be exceptionally thin. However, some analysts suggest this new ‘Air’ model may not be the best choice for many potential buyers. The launch of the iPhone Air is being compared to the 2008 debut of the MacBook Air, which was groundbreaking for its thin and lightweight design. While the iPhone Air will share these characteristics—an ultra-thin form factor and lightweight design—it’s anticipated to have some significant compromises, such as reduced battery life and a single rear camera. This contrasts with the prevalence of smartphones with large batteries, some boasting capacities of 7,000 mAh, at more affordable prices. The iPhone Air is also expected to be positioned between the entry-level iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro in terms of price, potentially falling short in specifications and everyday performance compared to both. Thinness, once a major selling point, is now less critical than factors like battery life, performance, and camera capabilities. The Samsung S25 Edge is cited as an example of a thin phone that didn’t achieve market success due to disappointing sales. The iPhone Air might not become a blockbuster product, but it could surpass the sales figures of previous Mini and Plus models.
